Meditation Reliably Reduces Stress in Healthy People (Galante et al., 2023)

Read the paper
Researchers pooled the raw data from 15 experiments across 8 countries (2,371 people) and confirmed: mindfulness programs significantly reduce psychological distress in ordinary, healthy adults, and the effect lasts at least six months.

The Question

We know mindfulness helps people who are already struggling (depression, anxiety, chronic pain). But does it also help regular people who just want to feel less stressed and more balanced?

What They Found

  • Mindfulness programs reduced distress by a meaningful amount compared to people who did nothing, with effects lasting between one and six months after the course ended
  • The effect was consistent across 8 countries, different types of mindfulness programs, and different populations
  • The average participant was 34 years old, 71% were women, and most were moderately stressed, not clinically ill
  • People who were more distressed at the start benefited more, which suggests the programs are especially useful for people going through a rough patch
  • The benefits held up even after accounting for missing data and differences between studies

How They Tested It

  • This is an individual participant data meta-analysis: instead of just averaging published results, the researchers got the raw data from each experiment and re-analyzed everything from scratch. This is the most thorough type of evidence review that exists
  • They searched 13 databases and found 15 qualifying experiments with 2,371 people total
  • All experiments were properly randomized and met a pre-set quality bar
  • They only included in-person mindfulness programs led by trained instructors in non-clinical settings (universities, workplaces, community centers)

Caveats

  • The comparison group simply did nothing, so part of the benefit could come from group interaction, having a routine, or instructor attention rather than meditation specifically
  • Most participants were women in their 30s from Western countries, so the results might not generalize perfectly to everyone
  • The effect size is small-to-moderate: real and reliable, but not a magic fix. Think of it as a steady, noticeable improvement in how stressed you feel

How Reborn Helps

This is the gold-standard evidence for "meditation reduces your stress." Not in patients, not in monks: in normal people living normal lives. Reborn delivers the same type of guided mindfulness practice that drove these results, available daily on your phone.
